Plum Township derives its name from the groves of wild plum trees. Cherry Tree Township was formed from the northern portion of Sugar Creek Township in 1806 and in 1817 Plum Township came into its own only later to be divided for the formation of Oakland Township in 1841 and Jackson Township in 1845. Present Plum Township was originally included in Sugar Creek Township in 1800.
